Poetry: PATUNGO SA BUKAS NA WALANG KASIGURUHAN

A Blind Man's Lament

May 2022 will be the year that the Philippines makes history yet again - for electing into the position of President the son of a former President who pillaged and plundered his own country.  Yes, we will be in the annals of history as the laughing stock of the world - a rather unflattering prospect for any Filipino who still carries his citizenship with pride.

Filipinos are a forgiving bunch.  With only a few decades passed after the country was left in shambles by the late dictator Ferdinand Edralin Marcos, the Philippines is set to enshrine his son onto the highest position in the land.  Its as if we have forgotten how we were systematically deceived and robbed by the very man who many Juans put their trust into.  His heirs have never spoken a word of apology for the atrocities that were committed during those times and neither have they willingly returned a single peso of the huge sums of money that their patriarch (and his cronies) stole.

And yet here we are now, with throngs of "believers" thoroughly convinced that the son is just as brilliant as the father.  That they are innocent of the charges of plunder and that Martial Law was the best thing that ever happened to this country.  Oh what a forgiving bunch Filipinos are!  Fools with eyes that are shining with the gilded promises of a family who have done nothing but make lofty promises drawn from a bygone time when the Philippines was the envy of Southeast Asia.

I wonder if the voters would actually take responsibility for it all once the country finally goes to the dogs?  Having fallen for the charms of the Marcoses, the throngs of blinded faithful will probably just point to sabotage by a third party just to salvage whatever would be left of their pride after throwing away their vote to the wrong candidate.  No they will not take responsibility for it all.  And by then it will all be too late.

Building a Client PC in 2022

Got a sudden call from an old computer client from way back.  He asked me to build a PC for his kid who wanted to play PC games and not just console games.  So here I am back at it.  Hehehe.  No, I didn't exactly take the request.  I passed it to one of my mates who is still actively in the computer business.

My observations during this process?

  • The global chip shortage has really made graphics cards super expensive!  Practically the price of a system unit already!  I can't wait for the foundries to recover and bring down prices back to pre-crisis levels!
  • The mobo we used had all the bells and whistles - gigabit lan, wifi, bluetooth, and multi-screen display support!  Back in the day, we would already be jumping for joy if we got our hands on a Creative Sound Blaster sound card!  Even more so when we got our hands on a 14.4kbps fax modem!  Boy things have really changed!
  • We also installed a 128gb NVME SSD card for the boot drive.  The resulting PC has been a monster compared to my dinosaur of a computer at home!
  • Ram was a single stick 16gb.  A far cry from the 4mb fast page memories that we used back in the day!  And the programs that these computers run are still complaining for more RAM modules!
I guess for young people who grew up to the current generation of computer hardware, they would find all this hardware ordinary.  But for people like me who saw how big and chunky old computers were back in the day, I can't help but marvel at how far technology has come!  Humans are truly amazing!  Now if only we can put all that creativity to make all this technology work towards saving our planet as well, maybe we as a species would have a shot at survival.

2021 was a bad year for my blog

I am sad to admit that I barely wrote anything for 2021.  I even neglected to write some poetry for the annual "Buwan ng Wika" celebrations..  What happened?  Covid fatigue?  Cabin fever?  I dunno really.  I just know that I didn't feel like writing much.

So why the heck am I writing now?  I dunno.  Just thought of visiting my blog and much to my horror I realized just how few posts I had for 2021.  Sheesh.  I've gotta get my act together!  And hopefully this year I'll get the inspiration to write again..

Hello 2022.  It's an election year.  For sure I'll lots of thoughts I'd love to put down here..  All right, that's it for now.  I'm gonna pop back in once I have more time and inspiration on my fingers.

Basic 1hp Inverter Aircons in the PHL

With so many people dropping by our thread in TPC asking for recommendations, naisip ko na gumawa ng mini-roundup ng 1hp inverter aircons to help potential buyers come to a decision sooner..  This is by no means an authoritative guide, so please take it with a grain of salt..  First part is for Window-Type and the second part is for Basic and Standard Split-Type units.

So here is my roundup of the 1HP window-type inverters that are currently available in the market.. (in no particular order!)

1. Panasonic CW-XS108VPH

https://www.panasonic.com/ph/consumer/air-conditioners/window-airconditioner/inverter/cw-xs108vph.specs.html This thing should be on top of any buyer's list. Despite being overdue for a compressor (and refrigerant) update, this thing is still one mean dual fan machine that leads the market in durability and value. I’ve seen this unit being sold for 28k which leads me to think that they will be updating this unit soon.

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.8

Refrigerant – R410a

Size (WxHxD) - 560 x 375 x 700

2. LG LA100EC

LG LA-100EC LG's compact unit has a lot of features in a small package.  Wifi, Dry Mode, Sleep Mode, and and Energy Saver that you will usually find only on a split-type unit are standard.  Efficiency is a bit low which is typical of compact units.  BTW, it has a 0.75hp sibling in case your room is a bit on the small side.

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.1

Refrigerant - R32

Size (WxHxD) - 497 x 317 x 623

3. LG LA100EL

LG LA100EL Of course LG also has a full-sized unit that has high efficiency values on top of wifi, dry mode, and sleep modes.  Great value unit in spite of not having an auto air swing!

EER (KJ/HW) - 12.42

Refrigerant - R32

Size (WxHxD) - 600 x 380 x 630

4. Koppel KV09WR-ARF31

Koppel Page Here  Homegrown aircon manufacturer Koppel joins the fray with their own high-efficiency unit that's most probably a rebadged Midea FP-51ARA010HEIV-N4 with a modified touch panel, IR receiver, and front grille.  They're more expensive than the Midea units but they're more powerful on paper.  Be warned as a busted PCB can easily set you back by 20k resulting in a spectacular loss for anybody.

EER (KJ/HW) - 13.5

Refrigerant - R32

Size (WxHxD) - 560 x 400 x 670

5. Gree KX-25i / U-J09-6DR

Gree PH Page Chinese aircon leader Gree has the local distinction of being the most rebadged window-type unit available.  They may look plain, but these units are no slouches in the performance and durability departments.

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.82

Refrigerant - R32

Size (WxHxD) - 560 x 375 x 708

  • Unitech UT-GJC09VR <-- Cheapest! Available exclusively in Unitop branches!

6. TCL TAC-09CWI/W

Emilio S. Lim page  TCL is the second most affordable unit in our roundup; it won't burn a huge hole in your pocket, but will require the largest hole in your wall as It's as big and powerful as the 1.5HP of other brands.  Get it while it's still cheap!

EER (KJ/HW) - 13.3

Refrigerant - R32

Size (WxHxD) - 660 x 430 x 680

7. Hitachi RA-10HV

https://www.familyapplianceph.com/product/ra-10hv/ This is the single-blow successor of the first WT Inverter aircon that was introduced in the country.  It retains the chassis and layout of the original but adopts a single side discharge vent and loses the heating function to bring down costs.  Dual fans, dry mode, and unique aesthetics highlight this unit.  Efficiency ratings are top notch but be warned that there have been owners who have reported costly front panel PCB failures due to defective design.

EER (KJ/HW) - 13.5

Refrigerant – R410a

Size (WxHxD) - 600 x 410 x 795

8. Hitachi RA-10HVQ

RA-10hvq This is Hitachi's uber compact unit that still has more impressive numbers than the LG compact.  Small size and unique metallic blue finish highlight this unit.  This has been verified to be a single fan unit.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JT6czqiezos  Be warned however that there have been owners who reported having multiple issues that run up costs to the tens of thousands primarily due to a poorly-designed front panel.  BTW, it now also has a 0.75hp sibling in case your room is a bit on the small side.

EER (KJ/HW) - 12.3

Refrigerant – R410a

Size (WxHxD) - 470 x 340 x 600

9. Hitachi RA-10HSV

RA-10HSV brochure Hitachi intends to further solidify their hold on the compact segment by releasing the cheaper HSV variant.  It is another single fan unit to cut costs, and even has 0.60HP and 0.75HP capacities for small rooms.  AVOID AT ALL COSTS as not only it is susceptible to the front panel PCB failing prematurely, it operates like a conventional aircon resulting in high electric bills!  Watch this video if your don't believe me! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcpKJH8uDCY&t=1s

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.9

Refrigerant – R410a

Size (WxHxD) - 470 x 340 x 600

10. Fujiair FWI-29CSI

FUJIAIR FWI-29CS1 Another entry in the local market is this unknown Japanese brand which makes its units in Taiwan, Thailand and China.  This was originally rebadged by Fujidenzo in 2014 as the handsome IWAR-2910 (P32k!) but replaced later on by the Gree oem IWAR-90 (27k! only) to be more competitive.  BTW, they also have a 0.75hp unit but it uses the same chassis and is a bit pricey.  It's good but expect parts to be costly.  Get it if you can get one being sold for less than 28k!

EER (KJ/HW) - 13.4

Refrigerant - R410a

Size (WxHxD) - 560 x 400 x 630

Known variant: FUJIDENZO IWAR-2910

11. Midea FP-51ARA010HEIV-N4

FP-51ara010heiv-n4 The Chinese OEM of Concepcion Industries flexes their muscle with this updated no-frills unit.  Very efficient yet very affordable, it actually presents a very attractive proposition for any buyer.  It's also the second most rebadged unit in the local market.

EER (KJ/HW) - 13.0

Refrigerant - R32

Size (WxHxD) - 560 x 400 x 670

Known variants

  • Hyundai HAC-W10INV-A;
  • Matrix MX-INV1100;
  • American Home AHAC-WINV1000M;
  • XTREME XACWT10i;
  • Crowne Aire 1hp;
  • York YWJF09ZT–MBORX;
  • Dowell ACW-2i-1000RT;

12. Carrier WCARH009EEV

Carrier wcarh009eev  The outgoing model from Concepcion Industries is still a value-packed unit with a Premium Filter, Sleep Mode, Dry Mode, Econo mode, and even throws in their patented ESP (energy-saving plug) for good measure!  Aside from lagging behind in environmental friendliness, their units are on the pricey side despite having Midea components inside.

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.36 (converted from 13.3 SEER)

Refrigerant - R410a

Size (WxHxD) - 560 x 375 x 637

14. Condura WCONH09EEVI

Condura-wconh09eevi  The stripped down version of the Carrier unit is a no-frills unit that practically looks the same.  Good thing they didn't remove the ESP!  Sadly, it's still on the expensive side when compared to the other units available in the local market.

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.36 (converted from 13.3 SEER)

Refrigerant - R410a

Size (WxHxD) - 560 x 375 x 637

15. Carrier WCARJ009EEV

Carrier Aura 1hp  Concepcion Industries refreshes their trusty unit by changing the face but keeps everything else.  Still with 8-in-1 Premium Filter, Sleep Mode, Dry Mode, Econo mode, and even throws in their patented ESP (energy-saving plug) for good measure!  Clearly just a cosmetic change from the previous model as almost nothing has changed.  Bad value for the price if you ask me.. Meh.

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.8

Refrigerant - R410a

Size (WxHxD) - 560 x 375 x 647

16. Midea U FP-51ARA010HEIV-U5

Midea U  Midea pulls a rabbit out of the hat and finally brings the Midea U to our shores after less than a year from the North American release!  Compact size, beautiful and unique aesthetics, wifi connectivity, and super quiet operation thanks to its unique U-shaped chassis and dual fans make this unit a really interesting buy.  You can still use it for regular WT aircon provisions but it really shines for houses with windows that slide up and down.

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.88

Refrigerant - No data

Size (WxHxD) - 490 x 345 x 560

Reminder: Be aware that upgrading from a conventional unit to an inverter unit can be a bit of a challenge.  You will still need to add some allowance to your installation hole as these units are bigger and need to be installed at a backward 5deg tilt to allow for good drainage.  Also, if your old aircon didn't need a support bracket, these units need one as they can be very long and heavy.  Lastly, if your room doesn’t have an aircon outlet with a dedicated breaker at the distribution panel, you will most likely need to have an isolation breaker and supply line installed by a competent electrician.

_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*

Split-type aircons have gone a long way from the chunky cooling boxes that just cooled your room.   Today's basic units have smart features that window-types can only wish they could offer.  Some standard features are: Econo Mode, Sleep Mode, Dry Mode, Auto mode, Timer modes, Soft Startup, and even smart protections that keeps it running for a short while after you turn it off.

The first part was a mini-roundup of window-types to help potential buyers.. This part is for split-type units. Again, this is by no means an authoritative guide, so please take it with a grain of salt.. The following is my roundup of the BASIC / STANDARD 1HP split-type inverters that are currently available in the market. If you're looking for premium models, this is not the roundup for you.. (in no particular order!)

1. Mitsubishi SRK10YL-S / SRC10YL-S

MHI SRK10YN-S Mitsubishi is crawling back into the RAC (Residential Air Conditioner) market with designs that your Tito would surely fawn over.  They might not be much to look at, but you can be sure that they will get the job done.

EER (KJ/HW) – 12.7

Refrigerant – R410a

Notable features – It’s a Japanese brand

2. Gree U-W09-3DR

Gree PH site Gree split-type units are also some of the most commonly-rebadged units on the local market. Gree-branded units don't come cheap as these are the current-generation units while rebadged units are typically 1 generation older.  Rebadged Gree Livo units can be as cheap as 21k!

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.55

Refrigerant – R410a

Notable features - Also available in Black;

3. Panasonic Aero Standard CS-PU9VKQ

Panasonic Aero Standard It's not pretty.  It's not cheap.  But it sure is efficient at cooling your room!  It's not much of a looker, but you can be sure it's a performer!

EER (KJ/HW) - 13.64

Refrigerant – R32

Notable features - It's made by Panasonic, it must be good!

4. LG HSN09ISS

LG Standard 1hp LG goes on the offensive with their white plastic box.  Armed with an efficient dual-rotary compressor, this highly understated unit is a market favorite thanks to its competitive pricing.  Be warned however that LG units can be prone to minor problems that can be annoying but fixable.  You're almost sure to call in a service technician at some point of its service life.  Good thing that LG parts are comparatively cheaper and won't really cost too much to repair.

EER (KJ/HW) - 12.6

Refrigerant – R32

Notable features - Diagonal squirrel fan; Dual-rotary compressor; 10-years compressor warranty

5. Daikin D-Smart FTKQ25QVM

Daikin Tri-Fold link This is the basic D-Smart unit that will allow you to experience what it's like to own a Daikin.  It's not smart like Nicola Tesla, but smart enough to answer your cooling needs without you worrying about anything else.  Pricey but worth it!

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.72

Refrigerant – R32

Notable features - 0.75HP variant; Wide operating voltage; 3-years PCB warranty

6. Daikin D-Smart Queen FTKQ25TVM

Daikin Tri-fold link This is the standard D-Smart unit that was previously being sold as a premium unit but has since been re-classed to gain more market share. What it lacks in pomp it more than makes up for in quality and durability!

EER (KJ/HW) - 12.5

Refrigerant – R32

Notable features - 0.75HP variant; Wide operating voltage; 3-years PCB warranty

7. Midea FP-53AST010KEIV-W4 / FP-53AST010KEIV-B4

Midea Basic Units  The Chinese OEM of Concepcion Industries shows off their basic inverter unit with its high EER and 2 color choices.  They're not cheap but aftersales support is very strong thanks to local partner Concepcion Industries.

EER (KJ/HW) - 13.1

Refrigerant – R410a

Notable features - Available in Genesis White and Mirror Black

8. Samsung Standard Inverter AR09MVFHHWKNTC

Samsung Standard Inverter Samsung's basic inverter unit is as basic as they come.  Cheap price with low efficiency.  They ditched the triangle design for a more conventional one with not much else on offer.

EER (KJ/HW) - 10

Refrigerant – R410a

Notable features - 10-years compressor warranty; Voltage guard

9. Samsung Basic S-Inverter AR09TYHYEWKNTC

Samsung Basic S-Inverter Looking for something cheap? Then look no further! At a little below 20k, this is definitely Samsung's assault at the local aircon market.  Cheap as it is, EER is a bit low.  Tempting? Surely.  But be warned that you often get what you paid for in the end..

EER (KJ/HW) - 10.8

Refrigerant – R32

Notable features - Triangle design; Durafin flat pipes; 10-years compressor warranty

10. Condura Prima Max Inverter FP-53KXV009313

Condura Prima Max Budget brand Condura touts this as proudly made (assembled?) by Filipinos.. though most probably with Chinese-made Midea components..  It has decent figures but is being sold for an arm and half a leg despite being locally made.  Build quality is decent but the price is just a buzz-kill.

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.1

Refrigerant – R410a

Notable features - Made by Filipinos for Filipinos!

11. Hitachi Royal RAS-10HTP

Hitachi Royal Philippine assembled Hitachi is touted as using "Full DC" but still needs to be connected to AC mains to work.  The unit's stellar EER rating is really something to marvel at.  Sadly it's not as attractive as their window-type aircon but at least it doesn't look like something that came out of a Chinese factory.

EER (KJ/HW) - 13.8

Refrigerant – R410a

Notable features - 0.75HP variant

12. Carrier Alpha FP-53GCVBE010-303P

Carrier Alpha Carrier's basic unit isn't so bad.  It's actually priced cheaper at 32k than their window-type aircon!  Sadly though, there are a lot of cheaper options that are more efficient.  But if you factor in their nationwide network of service centers, owning one can be a worry free experience.

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.8

Refrigerant - R32

Notable features - Double clean system

13. Carrier Crystal 2 FP-53GCVBS010

Carrier Crystal 2 The old Crystal unit looked like an Alpha fitted with a 3k premium filter.  So they came out with a chunkier looking unit but with a lower price tag than the outgoing model.  This is a basic unit that is specifically marketed for families with sensitive babies or for people that have immuno-compromised respiratory systems.

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.9

Refrigerant - R32

Notable features - Double clean system; Premium air filter

14. Haier HSU-10TSV13(DC)-SC

Haier PH site Haier is better known in the PHL for cheap TV's and Refrigerators.  The brand is recently on an offensive as this is on sale for only 16k! (unit only!) https://asianhomeappliance.com/home/detail_item/9835 Availability has improved but still expect to have problems later on with parts and service as there are still probably not that many authorized service centers at this time.

EER (KJ/HW) - 13.5

Refrigerant – R410a

Notable features - All copper pipes, high EER

15. Kolin KSM-IW10-6H1M

Kolin Split Aircon 1hp Local brand Kolin ensures their presence in the sub-30k segment with this 28k unit.  Clearly a rebadged Midea but with a decent price, the ionizer that is usually found on premium units is a smart move for the brand.  Not bad actually.  It just might cost a pretty penny to have it installed though as they rarely come with free installation.

EER (KJ/HW) - 12.6

Refrigerant - R410a

Notable features - Ionizer

16. Gree U-W09-3DR-DC

Gree PH site Gree finally releases a full-DC unit for the standard market and it seems to be the 3rd-generation Livo.  Understated looks but the specs on this unit are something to marvel at!  It uses R32 refrigerant and has an outdoor unit that you only see used by premium units!  A real monster!

EER (KJ/HW) - 14.8

Refrigerant – R32

Notable features - Largest outdoor unit; Highest EER among standard units!

17. AUX F-Series ASW-09A2 FADI

AUX F-Series Newcomer from China is out to prove themselves in the local market.  At 28k, these guys have an uphill battle especially against units from Gree, Samsung, and LG.  Early adopter feedback is positive so far and did I mention that their units supposedly come with a 5-year warranty that includes the PCB?! Very enticing!

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.6

Refrigerant – R410a

Notable features - 5-years warranty on parts; 10-years warranty on compressor

18. Hisense AS-09TR2S

Product Link This brand is better known for their affordable TV's but is quite a big company in China where it came from.  This unit is rather affordable as there was a cash buyer who paid just 21.2k for his unit.  Still very limited availability unlike their TV's.

EER (KJ/HW) - 13.5

Refrigerant – R410a

Notable features - none

19. Whirlpool SIA90B

Whirlpool PH site American appliance brand Whirlpool is down to pasting their brand on Chinese oem appliances.  This is likely a rebadged Hisense unit after a thorough google search of their remote.  Dunno about parts availability as there might not be that many authorized service centers outside of Metro Manila.  And typical of Whirlpool-branded units, this isn't cheap at 31.5k cash.

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.09

Refrigerant - R410a

Notable features - 1w standby power; 3-in-1 filter

20. Chigo Pura CHG-S156I100A

Chigo PH site  Relatively unknown here in the PH, the brand is actually well-known in China where it competes with Gree, Midea, and the other Chinese makes.  And instead of the standard white boxes that everybody is selling, Chigo sells some rather curvy evaporator units for 27k.  Still a lot cheaper than the Midea and Haier units.

EER (KJ/HW) - 12.95

Refrigerant – R410a

Notable features -High density Vitamin C filter

21. Sharp AH-XP10VF

Sharp PH site This must be the cheapest Japanese-branded aircon in this roundup.  At only 26k, it even comes with free installation thrown in for good measure.  Sharp isn't known for excellent aircons in the PHL, but in Japan it's one of the most trusted appliance brands.

EER (KJ/HW) - no data

Refrigerant – R32

Notable features - 0.5ºC Temperature Increments

22. TCL TAC-09CSA/KEI

TCL TAC-09CSA/KEI  This is probably the second cheapest inverter split-type aircon in the local market as you can find online sellers of this unit for only 21k with installation! ! I think it's slightly better in quality than Samsung's basic unit, but with few authorized service centers outside NCR plus, buyers might have some trouble later on getting parts and service.

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.6

Refrigerant – R410a

Notable features - Wide operational voltage;

23. Koppel Super Inverter KV09WM-ARF21C2

Koppel PH site  Homegrown aircon manufacturer Koppel doesn't sell a premium unit for the residential market and is more visible in the commercial market. Their filter is similar to the one on the Chigo Pura and is priced similarly too at 27.5k! The condenser unit grill however tells me that this is a rebadged Midea unit.  I came across an owner who swears that this aircon is absolute rubbish.  Be warned.

EER (KJ/HW) - 12

Refrigerant – R410a

Notable features - Hydrophyllic fins; High Density Vitamin C filter

24. Fujiair FS-25L2A-1C

Product link Japanese brand Fujiair is rather hard to come by as it is quietly being sold online by only 1 HVAC company. Ascets Corp. FB page   Similarly hard to find as their window-type unit, this aircon will be a gamble for anybody outside of Metro Manila to buy.  It's not cheap, and the only user feedback I got about it was that they're just so-so in performance.

EER (KJ/HW) - 12.2

Refrigerant – R410a

Notable features - none

25. TCL TAC-09CSA/SMI

SM Appliance site  This unit is exclusively being sold only in SM Appliance centers hence the "SM" in its model name.  Everything in the spec sheet is practically the same as the KE unit except being touted as "full DC inverter" but this is never mentioned in the TCL site..  The evaporator unit looks different but I think they're just the same banana.

EER (KJ/HW) - 11.6

Refrigerant – R410a

Notable features - Wide operational voltage;

26. AUX J-Series ASW-09A2 JADI

AUX J-Series Newcomer from China is really out to prove themselves in the local market with their standard unit.  At 30k, it's not a bad deal especially with that EER rating!  Early adopter feedback is positive so far and did I mention that their units supposedly come with a 5-year warranty that includes the PCB?! Very enticing!

EER (KJ/HW) - 13.4

Refrigerant – R410a

Notable features - 5-years warranty on parts; 10-years warranty on compressor

27. Panasonic Aero Deluxe CS-XPU9WKQ

Visit product page It's still looks plain but don't let its understated looks fool you.  It's not cheap for a standard unit but it sure is efficient at cooling your room thanks to PAM technology.  This deluxe model gets you NanoE for better air quality but with no increase in efficiency.

EER (KJ/HW) - 13.64

Refrigerant – R32

Notable features - NanoE technology

What about the other brands like Imarflex, Qube, Everest, Fujidenzo, American Home, Unitech, Tosot, Matrix, OX, Homemate, etc.?  They're all just pasting their brand names onto oem units from the big Chinese makes.  Are they any good?  They're not bad actually.  Remember that China has been manufacturing most of the world's equipment for the past two decades and product quality has steadily risen since.  Now if you really want to find out the oem of the rebadged unit in question, all you have to do is to search the internet for what brand has a matching remote control.  Another technique would be to scour the archives of Chinese manufacturers and have a look at the units that they sold in the past years as rebadged units are often from previous product generation of those manufacturers.

Reminder: Be aware that buying a split-type aircon costs more than just the sticker price.  Some units come with “free installation” while many do not.  Also, be prepared to shell out more cash for the: 1. delivery charge; 2. supply wire; 3. isolation breaker; 4. outdoor unit mounting bracket; 5. excess copper tubing; 6. PVC drain pipe; 7. Masonry works.  Make sure to ask the seller as to what are included and what are not. =)

Visiting the Departed

In the past whenever I would visit the cemetery, I often find myself going through the motions of lighting a candle and saying a prayer for the dear departed..  I never really felt anything when I went to the cemetery..

Until I found myself visiting the grave of my mom and getting the feeling of my heart getting wrenched out of my chest..  Now I know how they feel like when they visit the graves of their loved ones..  And why some people try so hard not to visit the graves of their loved ones..

Buwan ng Wika 2020: KAILAN KAYA MULI

 Agosto 30, 2020

KAILAN KAYA MULI?

Tulala na naman at lutang ang diwa.
Kay bagal ng takbo ng oras..
Klak, klak, klak ang oras pumapatak..
May bago na kayang post si kras?

Bawal lumabas.
Maaari man, may hangganan ang oras.
Walang pera kahit man lang ayuda.

Maging matatag at manampalataya.
Yan na lang ang aming magagawa.
Pamumuhay na gaya ng dati..
Kailan nga kaya muli?

Buwan ng Wika 2020: KATAHIMIKAN

Agosto 26, 2020

KATAHIMIKAN

Walang katapusan na lamang na rigudon.
Sigawan. Bangayan. Sagutan. Iyakan. Tampuhan.

Poetry: I SAY A PRAYER

August 7, 2020

I SAY A PRAYER

I bite my lip as another wail hits me,

the pain and agony ever stronger.

Cringing at the thought of what has come to be,

I close my eyes and pray this is just a dream..

Our world has become full of nothing.

Nothing but bad news and broken promises.

Our happiness taken away by the unseen,

we struggle and seethe as we lose our senses.

Even I have become reduced to rubble.

I am slowly enticed by the call to rabble.

Unwilling to accept what has come to be,

what it is doing to you and me?

I cry inside as another wail jolts me.

Helpless, hopeless, and unable to move - checkmate.

There is where I ought to be,

yet here I am stuck and bemoaning my fate.

Lord what has become of our world?

Trials, tribulations, and evil are amuck.

And in the deafening silence of my prayer,

I am reminded that I must not waver.

Pray, pray, and pray some more.

Pray like you've never prayed before.

And in a world full of nothing,

You are my everything.

Chinese-made Inverter Aircons in the PHL..

Chinese-made products have a bad reputation that precedes them. For years they've been known to be poor-quality knock-offs of top-end products. Nowadays though, many of us are surprised to learn that many of our Superbrands actually have Chinese OEM's making most of their products. So who are the big China aircon brands and what are they officially selling locally at the 1HP capacity?

I. Window Type Inverter
  1. Gree <click here for link> This is currently the most widely rebadged window-type inverter aircon in the local market. Slide-out chasis, R32 refrigerant, Panasonic compressor, and 5-year compressor warranty are standard.
  2. Midea <click here for link> Midea is locally distributed by Concepcion Industries and this unit has been updated to compete with the Gree units. Slide-out chassis, R32 refrigerant, and 5-year compressor warranty are standard. Price is similarly around 23k to directly compete with the Gree units.
  3. Haier - they're currently NOT selling a window-type inverter, but they do have some distinct conventional units thanks to their "whirlpool" grille design.
  4. Chigo - similar to Haier, Chigo is NOT selling a window-type inverter unit. They do have very competitive conventional units though.
  5. TCL <click here for link> They're currently selling the cheapest 1HP window-type inverter in the market. Slide-out chassis, R32 refrigerant, Anodized fins, 5-in-1 filter, and 5-year compressor warranty are standard. It's hard not to take it seriously.
  6. HiSense - they're NOT yet selling any window-type aircons at all.

The Chinese aren't lagging behind in their Window-type inverter offerings. These units are easy to clean, full-sized, and built like an Isuzu truck. They don't boast of new technology like dual rotary compressors, Wi-Fi connectivity, and dual fan motors. But they bolster their efficiency by using the latest R32 refrigerant and are able to get the job done with little fanfare. If you just need your room to be cooled quietly and efficiently, it might be worth your time to take a look at their units.

II. Split-Type Inverter
  1. Gree <click here for link> Gree split-type units are also some of the most commonly-rebadged units on the local market. Gree-branded units don't come cheap as these are the current-generation units while rebadged units are 1 generation older. 2-color variants, R410 refrigerant, i-feel function, Smart Shutdown, 4-fan speeds, Low-power startup, and 5-year compressor warranty come standard.
  2. Midea <click here for link> Midea has some very attractive units aside from the generic white boxes from everybody else. R410 refrigerant, Auto-clean function, Premium filter, and 5-year compressor warranty come standard.
  3. Haier <click here for link> These units are a bit hard to come by as there aren't that many appliance stores that sell this brand. Expect parts to be equally hard to come by if you're from outside Metro Manila. R410 refrigerant, Hyper PCB, Silver Nano Coating, Self-cleaning function, Anodized fins, and 5-year compressor warranty come standard.
  4. Chigo <click here for link> Instead of the standard white boxes, Chigo sells some rather curvy evaporator units. R410 refrigerant, Anodized condenser fins, Premium filter, and 5-year compressor warranty come standard.
  5. TCL <click here for link> They're not selling the cheapest in this segment, but they do have a good contender nonetheless. R410 refrigerant, Autovolt PCB, Low-power startup, Anti-mildew coating, and 5-year compressor warranty come standard.
  6. HiSense <click here for link> R410 refrigerant, Smart mode, i-feel function, 4-in-1 filter, and 5-year compressor warranty come standard. Hisense has limited items on offer but it can change once their brand gains traction and a strong local marketing partner.

So many local brands like American Home, Everest, Fujidenzo, Sharp, Mabe, Kolin, Carrier, Hanabishi, etc. all sell rebadged units in one form or another. If you know what to look for, it's often easy to find out the OEM of your home aircon. Many of the features of the established Japanese and American brands are slowly being offered by the Chinese makes in their premium lines (R32 refrigerant, Wi-Fi, dual-rotary compressors, ionizers, etc.). It's a red ocean market after all.. For now, the Japanese brands Panasonic, Daikin, and Mitsubishi are still tops when it comes to their split-type units. So they can't rest on their laurels as the Chinese makes are slowly catching up.

Disclaimer: I am NOT in love with China-made products and I definitely have very little love for the Chinese Communist Party who are making things annoying in our part of the globe. Neither am I connected to any of the above brands in any way. Nagkataon lang na they present a very solid alternative to the big brands that have come to be entrenched in the local market kaya gusto ko silang mabigyan ng exposure.

My take on the decline in English proficiency in the PHL

I decry the continuing decline of Pinoy's English proficiency..  For a country that claims to have both Filipino and English as our primary languages, we have effectively run ourselves out of contention as a leading choice for the BPO industry..

And this has heralded the phenomenon of "Smart Shaming" as prideful idiots band together to refuse correction.

The result? Nobody wants to make an effort to offer corrections anymore.  Instead of people graciously accepting correction, we get rabid retorts like "ikaw na ang perfect" "ikaw na ang matalino" and "edi wow." And this has resulted in a steady increase in spelling and grammar errors not just in social media but also in schoolwork. End result? Declining English literacy.

Never enough

No mountain is too high.  No valley is too low.  No ocean is too deep.  No plain is too wide.

Nothing is too expensive.  No job is too hard.  Nobody is too strong.  No job is too arduous.

Reject the impossible. Everything is possible. It is all just in your mind. You do not need to unwind.

If you do not act then you are weak.  If you complain then you are weak.  If you surrender then you are weak.  If you fail then you are weak.

You are a slave to the society.  Man has become the victim of his own construct.  And in a world that waits for no one, it will never be enough.

Not enough time.  Not enough money.  Not enough effort.  You are not enough.

Tough Love

I guess I have always been an advocate of tough love.

tough love
/ˌtəf ˈləv/
nounnoun: tough lovepromotion of a person's welfare, especially that of an addict, child, or criminal, by enforcing certain constraints on them, or requiring them to take responsibility for their actions.
Whether as a parent, a sibling, or as a lover I believe that it is part of my responsibility to look out for the ones that I love.  This also includes administering discipline (or punishment) even if it may be hurtful and painful. While I may be coming across as cold and brutal but it also pains me to be doing so.  The only reason why I would be doing it is because I care for the person.

And if the person should refuse to reform and choose to leave, all I have is myself to blame for failing my loved ones.  =( Tough love is tough - not only on the loved ones but for the one loving them as well..

Welcome Home My Friend

I've been asked to write this in the past by my friend.  She wanted me to let her see it while she was still alive as she wanted to know what I had to say about her while she was still able to hear (or read) my words and not when she was already gone.  I told her that there were no words needed to be spoken and that she already knew what I had to say about her being my friend.  But now that she has finally passed, I believe that I still owe her a word or two so that people would know what kind of friend she was to me.

Bang was actually the love interest of my friend John way back in High school.  She was a rather unassuming girl that my friend happened to have taken a fancy to.  And in the funny turn of events that happened, I ended up becoming friends with her as John moved on and pursued other interests.  A lot of things happened after that and it's funny to note that I even ended up becoming godparent to her only child.  And though we have drifted apart over the years, we were able to keep in touch through Facebook.

Bang was a good friend.  A fiercely loyal one at that.  I'm sure a lot of other people could attest to this.  She will be remembered mostly for how she kept smiling in spite of the great pain that she constantly lived with after getting afflicted with muscular dystrophy.  And for every beautiful picture that they shared on social media, there were countless hours suffering in bed or battling through waves of nausea that easily outnumbered them.

The Millenials coined the phrase "You only live once" and live life she did.  She still called me her friend even when I was no longer there for her.  And for that I am truly grateful.  I'm not writing this to curry favors with anybody.  I'm writing this to honor my friend who has finally been set free of her mortal body wracked with illness.  She is now finally with all of us always.

This was the last time we actually got to spend time together.

Arrividerci Bang.  And don't forget to write =P

Have a nice day!

Lovely  weather today. Cloudy with a light breeze blowing through the trees. I'm savoring my ice cream stick as I sit beneath the trees in the courtyard at Ayala District Mall in Talisay City.

As I remember the recent pictures of my kids that I got to see this morning, the only thought that goes through my mind is:
"I would be a great day to die."
Lovely weather. Good food. The cool breeze on my skin. How nice it would be to just close my eyes, lie down, and not have to open them again. A brief respite from the horrors of daily adult life can make you want more sometimes.  And I guess this is one of those moments.

If ever I do die today, I can be at peace knowing that all is well in the world today and that the world will just keep on going perfectly well without me in it.

Fed up with Apathy

What the hell is wrong with people's spelling and grammar these days?! Lots of people can't even spell basic words and complete sentences without making a mistake or two?!

And when you take the effort to correct them, you get smart shamed in return?! That, aside from those softies who would say: "Hayaan nyo na, nandun naman yung nais iparating na mensahe."

When the hell was mediocrity and poor performance okay?! I agree that life isn't all about doing well in school and having flawless English. There's a ton of other life skills out there that are necessary to succeed in the world. But when they can't even spell Tagalog words correctly, it really shows how education in this country has gone to the dogs! (Sorry dogs and dog-lovers, no offense meant!)

I'm appalled at the state of communication skills of our country's future.. Even worse is how people have become apathetic and accepting of it all.

*Sigh* ðŸ˜ Am I alone in these sentiments?

Summertime fun

It's summer yet again and I can't help but smile as I remember those happy years I spent as a child.  Summer would always be those wonderful days spent playing and playing.  So what exactly did we do during summertime?
  • We would climb the Indian Mango tree and the cotton fruit tree at the back yard to hang out and pick fruits.  As kids, having such nimble and light bodies was perfect for climbing trees.  And boy did we climb and climb, and climb!
  • After taking our afternoon naps, we would go biking.  With so many places to go and see, us siblings would often race the streets of our barangay.  There weren't that many vehicles yet so there wasn't much danger in the way of cars.  The primary danger came from dogs that were free to roam the streets and didn't think twice about chasing after a bunch of kids on bikes!  Yikes!
  • Other afternoons were spent playing with other kids in the neighborhood.  We would play Siato, Piko, Pit Ball, Tumbang Preso, and Agawan Base.  Once it started to get dark, we would play Taguan until our parents would call us home for dinner.   We would often come home all drenched in sweat and smelling unpleasant.  But boy did we have big smiles on our faces.
Looking back,  we gained a lot from all that playing.  All that running strengthened our legs as well as our lungs.  It also improved our hand-eye coordination as well as our motor functions.  And best of all it allowed us to socialize with other kids - something that is critical for integrating in society.

These days, kids are cooped up at home playing on their gadgets and game consoles.  There may be physical games on Kinect but it offers very little social interaction.  It's ironic that in the past, parents would practically drag their kids back home from playing all day outside; and these days parents would practically drag their kids out of the house just so that they would engage in some physical activity.

Now as an adult, I wish to see kids playing just as we did back then - running, squealing, and laughing as kids should do.  Summertime is a wonderful time for kids.  And each time I see kids playing, the kid in me can't help but smile and remember.  Just like I am remembering now. =)

Public Transportation Etiquette

I recently got to watch a Hongkong-made video about the bad things that people do while taking public transport.  It was very interesting and familiar at the same time because people here in the Philippines are guilty of some of these bad habits as well.

The most common experience I had with misbehaving commuters is a phone playing media loudly.  And true enough I have not held back in telling these unruly people who have little to no regard for other people in a cramped vehicle.

There was this one time that I was commuting to work and as it was still early I was trying to nap but there was this one passenger who was playing Mobile Legends on his phone as if he was by himself in the bus!  I looked at his seatmates and they were clearly annoyed as well but were trying their best to not kick up a fuss.  So I did the right thing by asking him if he would mind toning down the volume of his phone because it was just too noisy?  And quiet down it did!

The latest incident happened as I was on a UV Express van bound for Manila and my wonderful seatmate decided to fish out his phone to watch a Japanese soap opera on his phone without a headset.  The show had English subtitles but he didn't bother to turn down the volume.  And with how quiet and cramped it was at the back of the van, I politely asked him if he would like to borrow a headset because I had a spare one in my bag.  He politely begged off and chose to cut the volume and contented himself with reading the subtitles on his screen.  Aah, peace and quiet again..

I don't mean to be a prude but these people need to learn to not be a bother to others when riding on public transport!  There's just a limit to how much we should tolerate from these kinds of people!  And if ever you find yourself in such a situation, I urge you to stand up for yourself and tell such a person to behave properly!

Peace!

Poetry: FRUSTRATION

FRUSTRATION

It is truly vexing to wait
Doing and giving everything and yet
Nothing.
Truly frustrating

How hard can it be?
Why is it so hard to understand?
What's taking so long?
No time to spare for this.

No care to spare for your problems
Just meet the demands first
Shape up or ship out
And make it snappy.

It is a tragedy for all
When we don't get what we want
And at the end of it all?
Nothing but frustration.
