Poetry: My Friend Who I Call Sweetheart

August 28, 2013

MY FRIEND WHO I CALL SWEETHEART

We met in the fondest of moments
My memories of a time I cherish most.
T'was the most heartwarming of life's developments
A story that I believe is fit to post.

Together we became a pair
Two of a kind walking the same path
Hand in hand as we walked on a day so fair
One and one together in strange math.

On a fine day we met at a grand place of worship
to walk together and further our friendship.
The many who were there that day
wore the brightest of smiles and were gay.

And as the years passed for us two,
three blessings came as time flew.
New reasons to be happy and sad
a bittersweet mix of good and bad.

Life happened and wove its magic
changing our story to make it tragic.
So many things happened that changed us -
making me want to go back to a time that was.

As I smile now I cannot help but shed a tear.
We can never go back and make things over.
The past we can only see at the rear.
Only the unknown future awaits us dear lover.

Friends in the beginning we were.
Lovers in love with each other we became.
Parents to lovely children we now are.
Friends once again in the end of the game.

Hello to you
my dear friend
who I call
"Sweetheart"

Looking back on this one, the second to the last line of the last stanza should now be: "who I used to call." However, changing it now would totally change the context in which it was written at the time that it was written. So I'll just leave it as it is.
