I have a friend since way back in HS. Siya yung isa sa mga girls na
niligawan nung guy bespren ko nung HS. And nung 4th year na ako ng HS,
tinawagan nya ako to ask about my bespren (na eventually binasted nya).
Nung summer before ako papasok as a college freshman, we were
frequently exchanging calls and eventually naging good friends kami
until she became my first lady best friend.
She was actually popular and had her fair share of suitors. Syempre sa
akin nya ikinukwento lahat yun dahil ako nga yung confidant and bespren
nya. During my 2nd year in college (HS senior siya), she had an ardent
suitor whom she spent the weekend with when she had a big fight with her
family. Syempre it was a big mess and she only called me up to tell me
na nandun siya sa house nung guy. I told her that I didn't approve of
what she did but because I was her friend, I told her that I will not
disown her for what she had done. Instead I helped her to get back on
her wits and eventually go home.
She was so thankful to me when it all ended. It turned out that all her
friends got mad and turned their backs on her. I decided to sit down
and listen to her instead because she was my friend and it was the time
she needed me most. She then knew who her real friends were.
After I graduated, I learned of one thing she kept from me: that she was
already seriously dating a new guy she met in college. Inamin naman
nya na it was because I was busy with my college life and we had fallen out of
touch kaya hindi na nya naikwento. As her friend, I accepted this at
face value. And while still in college she got pregnant and had
to get married in a huff. I only found out after the wedding. This was
when we really drifted apart. I had decided to keep my distance mainly
because she was starting a new life na as a married person and partly
because I felt betrayed when I was the last to know about something so important.
She said that kaya nya ako hindi sinabihan was because ayaw nya na
mapagsabihan ko na naman daw siya. It really made me sad na ganun na
lang pala ako sa buhay nya. Para saan pa na ako yung bespren nya kung
yung ganung kalaking bagay eh hindi nya magawang sabihin sa akin?!
Years went by and now I'm also a family man. We have since reconnected
and have made an effort to catch up. Ninong nga pala ako nung unico hijo
nya kaya ayun medyo nagkikita na kami ulit. (Around 3 to 4 times a
year - but we do text each other naman) I've made an effort to be her
best friend na ulit somehow pero things are not like they were before -
mainly because ayaw ko magselos yung mga spouses namin! Ahahahaha.
Medyo guilty din ako for leaving her when she needed me most - at a time
that she was pregnant and hesitant to become a young mother. And now
that she's sick, I've been keeping tabs on her and making sure that
she's taken care of. I believe, this is what a true friend is for.
Its a story that goes round and around. But in the end, we're still
best of friends. And I just hope the Lord doesn't take her too soon. I
still need her to be there to listen to my aches and pains. Haay..
Recent update:
My bes was in the hospital again recently and I had made it a point to visit despite the many challenges at home. I really took it upon myself to make the trip to Bonifacio Global City and see my bes. She got confined because they found kidney stones in her kidney due to many meds that she has been taking.
I had a lot of fun. I wasn't able to stop over somewhere to buy flowers or food for pasalubong (as usual!) and ended up getting treated to pizza and dinner. Ahahahahaha! We chatted and caught up on the recent events in our lives. Well, mostly mine. Ahahahahahahaha! She hinted that she might be going away somewhere to seek medical treatment and I didn't press for details anymore. I'm sure she'll tell me all about it anyway at some other time.
I'm glad I made the trip. I ended up agreeing to treat her to a meal at Subway so we'll have to work that one out somehow..
To you my bes, I'll see you soon okay?! And sana naman matuloy na yung trip natin!
