Remembering Lola Wening

Lola Wening passed away early this morning.  She had stage 4 ovarian cancer.  And she had just celebrated her 90th birthday recently.

I remember being asked by her what I had wanted for a present from the province as she was due to visit us here in Manila.  I told her that I wanted pigeons as I was avidly raising pigeons as pets back then.  When Lola arrived from the province, she brought with her some native pigeons that were a lot smaller than the imported pigeons that I was raising.

Suffice to say the pigeons got beat up and died as a result of stress from the other pigeons.  Years later I would come to greatly appreciate Lola's effort as I came to realize just how hard it was to acquire those birds.  And I also realized then just how wonderful a person Lola Wening is.  She may not have been our blood relative, but I could not ask for a better person to be my Lola.

When I quit my job in April, the first thing I did was travel to Surigao to visit Lola in her sister's house.  She was frail and could barely sit.  But her smile was beautiful and she thanked me for taking the time and effort to visit her.  I told her that my siblings sent her their regards and honestly I couldn't bear to take a picture with her because I wanted to remember her as the healthy and beautiful Lola that was always smiling for us.

Goodbye Lola. We love you! You will be sorely missed!
