Sometimes, what a distressed person really needs is somebody to listen to them.. They don't want to be criticized or reminded of their faults or mistakes. They don't really need advice sometimes. They just want to be heard, acknowledged, and empathized.
And this is usually the method behind support groups. The design is to let people talk out their issues, listen to others talk about theirs, and eventually move forward by leaning on each other. You don't really need to get to know each other personally - and its this level of anonymity that gets most people talking. Because they are afraid that those who know them personally would judge them for what they have done or are going through..
I often think of this as "in the comfort of strangers" though if taken in a different context, the thought of a total stranger gaining insight into your life and using it against you can be very frightening to most people. You just have to cross your fingers and pray that nobody in the group is there to prey on everybody else..
Wala lang. Food for thought.
