Thoughts on my recent trip to the dog pound..

I recently got the chance to visit the city dog and cat pound and saw just how sad many of the dogs were.  They were locked up in cages and were not given a chance to run and stretch their legs or get some sunshine.  Their eyes were sullen and many of them were sick with colds.  And soon enough they would put down if their owners do not come to retrieve them.  The cats were no different.  They were also just as stressed and saddened by their situation.

Why am I writing about these poor pets?  Because a dog of mine once got caught by the dog catcher.  One of my maids let her out for too long and true enough she got caught the moment they passed by our street.  When I got back that afternoon they told me what had happened and I just shrugged it off.  I had decided that since Diday was already an old dog (she was already showing signs of arthritis) and I was actually starting to look for her successor, I actually thought that the City Veterinary Office had done me a service by taking her off of my hands.  That time, my word was final so I didn't even bother to visit Diday at the pound.  I thought that paying the P1,500 fine to get her back was a waste of money and just abruptly took it off of my mind.

That day that I visited the pound and saw those poor and unfortunate pets really left an impression on me.  I realized just how sad Diday might have been after getting caught.  She must have waited and waited for me to come for her but I never did.  Knowing now how scared and heartbroken she might have been has made me decide now that if such an incident were to happen again to our current dogs, I would waste no time to take them back. I now know better than to let my dog suffer in the pound.  That, and I learned that the penalty for a caught dog was reduced to P300 so long as it was a registered dog.

We now have 4 dogs at home.  All happy and rambunctious and eager to play with us anytime.  They watch the house when I am away at work and happily welcome me when I get home.  I can't imagine them all caged up and sullen so I make sure that they have plenty of time to run around our yard.

Thank you for reading! =)
