My upgraded aircon got burned AGAIN!

Finally the control box for my airconditioner came the other day.  I was very pleased when they installed the unit back into the room and we brought it to life.  Nice and cool.  And the aircon really got an upgrade with the installation of the remote-controlled control box!
- it now has 3 fan speeds instead of just two!
- the timer is now for 12 hours from the original 8 hours!
- there's now a fuse inside the control box to protect the unit from a voltage spike
- there's now a power-saving mode wherein the A/C turns off the blower fan to further cut down power consumption.  Coolest feature yet!

I was so pleased with myself that I even bragged to my wife that all was perfect.  Imagine my horror later that night when we found the power cable burned again!!  WTF?!  I quickly took off the power cable and studied what had happened.  Fortunately nothing else got burned this time around!  The brand new control box was spared from the fire!  I noticed upon investigation that only the grounding cable was burned while the primary power wires were not.  This was a quick indication to me that there was something wrong with my house's ground wire that caused the aircon's ground wire to burn.  A quick check of the voltages from the grounding prong to the chasis of the aircon proved my suspicions: 100vAC.  When I tested the grounding prong against one of the power connections it came back 220vAC.  Bad.  No wonder it burned in the first place!  I can't believe I missed this critical bit of information in my previous investigation!

The next morning I checked the grounding connection outside the house and I see that the wire has been severed and can no longer be reconnected. Damn.  So much for that.  I resolve to cut off the grounding wire to the aircon outlets in order to prevent a repeat of the problem.  I replaced the burned power cable the next day then cut off the grounding wire for the grounding prong.  Fortunately for me, the aircon powered on without a hitch!  Whew!

Sadly, my wife refuses to accept that I have solved the problem and insists that I call an electrician to look things over and decide if things are okay and its safe to use the aircon and outlets.  I told her that she should trust me more but she insists that I'm not a professional and that had I called a pro in the first place, the wire would not have burned a second time!  Oh well..

I'll be bringing an electrician over later so that she can have it looked at..  Haaay.
