Bought a SKK Infinity smart phone..

Here I am again with a new mobile phone..  An android one at that..  After recently selling my Samsung Galaxy Chat, I had set about looking for a slightly better phone.  One that could accommodate both of my SIM cards and still perform duties as a smart phone.

Enter the humble SKK Infinity..

As you can see in the picture above, its has some fairly decent specifications.  But specifications aside, its in the actual use that will tell you if its any good at all..

First the good:

  • It's fairly quick.  The dual core processor can really be felt despite the low ram count.  And compared to my previous Samsung Galaxy chat, this guy is fast!
  • It doesn't look cheap at first glance.  It's very eye catching and the white one is even more so. Only when you really look at it up close do you see that its a cheap plastic phone.   Although the white one looks a lot more elegant with its glossy finish, I chose the black one because I wanted a unit that doesn't get dirty easily.
  • It comes with party shuffle - I know that many android phones have this feature, but my Galaxy Chat didn't.  I love being able to listen to my songs at the press of the call button!  It has certainly improved my dull morning drive to work.
  • Battery life actually lasted up to two days.  I was surprised when my phone lasted up to two days of normal use.  Not bad!  But when I used it up extensively, it only lasted around 20 hours.  Oh well.
  • WiFi and Bluetooth actually work.  Connection speeds were actually stable and signal quality was very decent.
  • You can choose which sim can go up to 3G for data connection.  Older dual SIM phones won't give you this feature and instead specify a slot that can be used for 3G speeds.  I'm sure that in the future, phones would be able to have dual 3G standby.
  • The key on the keypad are actually widely spaced and are big enough for guys with stubby fingers.  Compared to my Galaxy chat that had narrow keys, this guy had oodles of space!
  • The camera has a flash and the flashlight app comes pre-installed!  Love it!
  • Very little bloatware.  Facebook, Viber, Opera, Gmail, Google Maps, and Twitter come standard.
Now the bad:
  • The keypad is unresponsive.  It is soooo frustrating to type messages on this thing!  You'd think that QWERTY phones type up messages faster because of the dedicated keys right?  Well, this thing sucks!  Tactile feel is bad, and so is button response.  I guess this is what I get for a Php 3,000.00 handset right?
  • The default input language sucks.  Composing messages is not intuitive and auto-capitalization does not work even though I had already turned it on.  Sheesh.  Gotta install a different one.  I'll find out after I download some dictionaries for this.. Update: After downloading the dictionaries, its still horrible..
  • The connector port is loose.  I encountered the charger coming off more times than I can count.  I'm still thinking on how to fix this issue..
  • The bundled headset sucks and does not come in the same color as the handset.  I tried my spare Samsung headset and unfortunately it doesn't work with this phone.  Luckily, I had a spare Nokia headset and tried it out.  And it worked!  Happy!
  • I can't seem to change the sound for the alarm..  I always end up pissed off when the alarm starts as the ukulele version "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" begins to play.  Damn.  Update: I've found the setting where I can change the alarm tone.  Whew!
I haven't tried using the camera yet so I can't post some sample snaps.  I'll update this next time once I do get the chance to do so..

Well, for P3,000.00 this isn't all to bad.  I just have to get used to it for now.  I'll be selling my Windows phone to cover the expenses for this unit and I hope that I'll be using this phone for a good long while..  Wish me luck!
